Archives of Masculinity

“Archives of Masculinity” is a living work that aims to deconstruct and inspect representations of masculinity. Monty, a trans-masculine person, asks 20 questions to cis-men in a series of interviews conducted over Facebook voice memos. The outcome of these conversations is an intimate excavation of the ways cis-men have learnt to behave, think and express while performing masculinity. In the duration of this interactive work, Monty will engineer their own performance of gender. The “Archives of Masculinity” will also be available to listen to and add to online.

Monty Hancock

Monty Hancock is a multi-disciplinary artist who lives and works on Gadigal Country in so-called Sydney. Monty practise involves murals, illustration, embroidery, zines, and video. Monty is interested in site-specific, interactive or community involved work. For this reason, interviews and conversation are a substantial part of their artistic process. Their work focuses on local history, queerness and transness. Most recently, Monty’s performance work interrogates gender and unravels representations of masculinity through their drag alter-ego “Troy From High School”, and their interactive work-in-development, Archives of Masculinity.
