Brittanie Shipway is a proud Gumbaynggirr and Turkish woman. A graduate from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA – Musical Theatre), Brittanie is an actor, singer, writer, dramaturge, producer and storyteller.

After studying acting in New York at the Lee Strasberg Institute of Film & Theatre, Brittanie returned home to Australia to make her professional debut at The Hayes Theatre Co. with RPG’s Big Fish (The Witch) and went on to perform in Chapel Off Chapel’s Ordinary Days (Claire) to great critical acclaim. Her recent credits include the Arbiter in Chess, Kay in The Sapphires, Lauren in Kinky Boots, Mary in Jesus Christ Superstar, Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, and Sport For Jove’s Othello and Rose Riot.

Her passion for new Australian work has seen her workshop many original theatre projects, most notably Sydney Theatre Company’s Muriel’s Wedding (Rhonda), New Musicals Australia’s Evie May: A Tivoli Story (Evie May) and Hermia in The Lovers (Bell Shakespeare). As a writer, Brittanie has been awarded grants from the Australia Council of the Arts, Create NSW and Belvoir: Shutdown Residency to develop new work. Her play A Letter For Molly debuted at the Ensemble Theatre to rave reviews under the directorial helm of the critically acclaimed Ursula Yovich. Brittanie also starred in this production in the lead role of Renee. Her other creative credits include writing short stories for ABC’s Radio National, SBS Voices, and composing original music in Sport For Jove’s recent production of Othello. In 2021 she was the resident writer for Theatre Works where her new work SENSER will premier. She is also the Festival Director for the First Stories program at Theatre Works, a new initiative that aims to engage and inspire First Nations storytellers.  In 2022, Brittanie was awarded the prestigious Dreaming Award from Australia Council to develop her new musical ‘Yellow Rock’.
